watch / yosemite ‘firefall’

every year for about two weeks in February, Yosemite Park’s Horsetail Falls is turned into a glowing orange ‘firefall’ by the setting sun, thus giving it the illusion of flowing lava.

the firefall is named after a Yosemite tradition than ran from the 30’s until the late 60’s, where park employees pushed piles of burning embers off Glacier Point to create a real firefall.

thankfully, they realised the error in their ways before someone died.

here is also a short documentary on the phenomenon.
