Roger Ballen found his name uttered amongst the ‘vibrant’ and ‘with-it’ youth who delved a bit deeper into the background behind a series of Die Antwoord’s images that were shared with the public over the last 2 years.
those images are but the tip of the iceberg, an iceberg which holds a wealth of unique sights so wild that it feels as if Ballen is the only person to ever have witnessed them…
however, the man has been doing what he does best for decades now, capturing nuances of South African backwater towns and dwellings. his images often pull at certain atmospheres – awkwardness, shame, a dark unknown, a bizarre mish-mash of seemingkly unprepared ‘aesthetics’ that provide for captivating photos.
these images are currently on exhibition at the Marta Herford Gallery in Germany.
